For those at high risk of developing nonmelanoma skin cancers (NMSC), namely basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma, a simple nutritional supplement may reduce the long-term risk. Nicotinamide, a water-soluble form of vitamin B3, has been shown to reduce the incidence of nonmelanoma skin cancer in certain patients. Several studies have shown that 500 mg of nicotinamide twice daily can reduce the incidence of new NMSC, as well as precursor actinic keratoses.

Nicotinamide is generally safe and well-tolerated, and does not have the flushing side-effect associated with its relative nicotinic acid. For those at risk of nonmelanoma skin cancer, nicotinamide is a good choice plus prudent sun protection. It is readily available without a prescription online and at drug stores and health food stores.
