What Is Miliaria (Heat Rash)?
Miliaria, commonly known as heat rash, is a skin condition caused by blocked sweat ducts that trap sweat beneath the skin. It often appears as small, red bumps or clear fluid-filled blisters and is most common in hot, humid environments.
At SOMA Skin & Laser, we diagnose and treat all forms of miliaria, from mild cases to more persistent or recurrent outbreaks.
Types of Miliaria
Miliaria is classified based on the depth of sweat duct blockage:
Miliaria crystallina – Clear, pinpoint blisters without inflammation; usually mild
Miliaria rubra – Red, itchy bumps (most common); often called “prickly heat”
Miliaria pustulosa – Inflamed, pus-filled lesions
Miliaria profunda – Firm, flesh-colored bumps; often in recurrent cases
Who Gets Miliaria?
While infants are most commonly affected, miliaria can occur at any age, especially:
In hot, humid climates
After fever or illness
During intense physical activity
When wearing tight or non-breathable clothing
Diagnosis & Treatment at SOMA Skin & Laser
Miliaria is typically diagnosed through a clinical skin exam. We tailor treatment based on severity and recurrence:
Treatment Options:
Topical soothing agents (calamine, hydrocortisone, menthol-based creams)
Antibacterial or anti-inflammatory agents (if pustular or infected)
Cooling therapies and lifestyle recommendations
Moisture-wicking clothing and proper skincare
In rare or resistant cases, we may recommend a short course of oral medications or consider underlying conditions contributing to sweat duct blockage.
