Topical antibiotics for treating acne

The first line of therapy for acne lesions is topical therapy, which often includes a topical antibiotic.

Benzoyl peroxide for acne

The most commonly used topical acne agents contain benzoyl peroxide in various concentrations as gels, washes, soaps and lotions. Benzoyl peroxide is important in treating acne as P. acnes, the bacteria that contributes to acne formation, does not develop resistance to it. Benzoyl peroxide is available in both prescription and over-the-counter formulations. According to Drugs.com there are 88 different brand names for Benzoyl Peroxide (see below). In addition, many dermatology offices offer their own formulaitons. Care must be taken since benzoyl peroxide can be irritating to the skin and bleaches clothing.
