Ozempic and Wegovy for weight loss

Ozempic and Wegovy are brand names for semaglutide. Ozempic is approved for use in diabetes managements, while Wegovy is approved for use in weight loss.  Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. Wegovy is indicated as an adjunct to a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity for chronic weight management. Wegovy is injected once weekly in the abdomen, thigh or upper arm. It is initiated at 0.25 mg once weekly for 4 weeks. In 4 week intervals, the dose is increased  until a dose of 2.4 mg is reached. Ozempic is used off-label in a similar fashion.

How much weigh can you lose with semaglutide?

In the clinical trials of Wegoy, there was a 14.9% (~ 35 lb) mean weight loss vs 2.4% (~6 lb) weight loss with placebo at 68 weeks. 83.5% on Wegovy vs 31.1% of patients with placebo achieved ≥5% weight loss at 68 weeks.
