Rhinophyma Laser Treatment in New Jersey

What is rhinophyma?

Rhinophyma is a skin disorder associated with rosacea. In rhinophyma the tissue of the nose enlarges resulting in a red, bumpy or bulbous nose. It is not known why some people with rosacea develop this severe form and others do not. Treating rosacea early with appropriate medications may reduce the chance of developing rhinophyma. Rhinophyma is most common in men, especially above age 50.

How is rhinophyma diagnosed?

Rhinophyma is a clinical diagnosis. Enlargement of the nose in a background of rosacea makes the diagnosis fairly obvious.

How is rhinophyma treated?

Although topical and oral medications can help rosacea, and may prevent rhinophyma if used early enough in the course of the disease, there is no effective medication for treating rhinophyma. Treatment of rhinophyma is therefore procedural.

Surgery and laser treatment for rhinophyma

Various surgical and resurfacing techniques are used for the treatment of rhinophyma. The enlarged tissue can be debulked with a scalpel or an electrosurgical device. The nose can then be sculpted back into its normal form using CO2 laser.

The DEKA SmartXide DOT fractional CO2 laser can be used to treat rhinophyma. In this procedure, the treatment area is first numbed with local anesthesia, after which a number of passes are performed with the CO2 laser. At the end of the treatment the nose will look very raw and red, but the nose has a great capacity to heal due to the many sebaceous glands. After several weeks the treated area will be fully healed, though redness may persist for a while longer. After the rhinophyma laser treatment, the outcome is assessed. Sometimes additional treatments are performed to get to the shape and contour desired.
