miraDry Treatment for Hyperhidrosis in New Jersey
Underarm sweating is common problem that can be distressing and interfere with your professional and personal life. Excessive sweating is also called hyperhidrosis. If you are bothered by excessive underarm sweat, need to apply antiperspirant frequently, need to change clothing due to sweating, or feel insecure in social situations, then treating your hyperhidrosis might be the right thing to do.
What is the miraDry procedure for underarm sweating?
MiraDry is a novel procedure that effectively reduces underarm sweating. It has long lasting and immediate results on underarm sweat, is non-invasive, and has minimal downtime. The handpiece from the miraDry System, when placed on the underarm, delivers precisely controlled energy to the region where the sweat glands reside and eliminates sweat glands non-invasively. The sweat glands don’t grow back once eliminated, resulting in a dramatic and lasting reduction of underarm sweat. Over 100,000 miraDry procedures have already been performed.
The miraDry procedure is FDA-cleared to significantly reduce underarm sweat. It is a non-invasive outpatient procedure performed in our office. miraDry works by delivering precisely controlled electromagnetic energy to the underarm area, damaging and elimiinating the underarm sweat glands.
You may see results with just one treatments, but some patients require two or more procedures to maximize the quality and duration of results. Each appointment generally lasts about an hour.
Are there other hyperhidrosis treatments besides miraDry?
Other treatment options for hyperhidrosis include antiperspirants and Botox. These temporarily disable the sweat glands for varying lengths of time and require repeat treatments to maintain effectiveness.
What are the results of miraDry?
The miraDry system destroys the underarm sweat glands, and the sweat glands do not return following treatment. This results in a long lasting reduction of underarm sweat. In a clinical study, patients experienced an average of 82% reduction in underarm sweat. You should notice a reduction in sweat immediately after treatment. As with any medical procedure, results will vary by person.
What happens during the miraDry procedure?
The miraDry procedure is performed in our New Jersey office. You will be given pre- and post- miraDry procedure instructions, and asked to shave both underarms prior to a procedure visit. If you have not shaved, your hair may be clipped or shaved. This allows for ease of treatment.
You will be lying down on your back for the procedure, with your arms positioned above your head on a special support pillow. At the start of each miraDry procedure, a technician will mark the skin of your underarm with a temporary tattoo to indicate where the miraDry applicator will be placed. Injectable anesthetic will be used to numb the area prior to the procedure. When the anesthetic is injected, you may feel a pinch or stinging sensation with each injection. Multiple injections into the skin are used in each underarm to make the procedure more comfortable.
Once your skin is numb, the staff will place the miraDry device on your underarm skin on the marked area. Once the device is positioned, the miraDry System will be turned activated. You will feel suction of the skin but should not experience pain or discomfort. This will be repeated multiple times. If you begin to feel significant discomfort or pain during the procedure either in the treatment area or your arm, please alert the operator immediately so more numbing can be injected
After the procedure is complete, the technician will clean the treated area. You will be given an ice pack to the underarm area after the procedure to reduce potential swelling. You can then return to your normal activities, although we recommend avoiding any vigorous activity with your arms for several days.
The entire office visit and treatment lasts about one hour.
Does the miraDry procedure hurt?
Patients may feel suction from the vacuum in the handpiece, but little or no pain is felt for most patients. Patients rated the procedure an average pain score of 2, on a scale from 1 to 10 (1=no pain, 10=worst pain).
What happens after the miraDry procedure?
There is minimal to no downtime following the mirDry procedure. You can take mild over-the-counter pain medication and use of ice packs for a few days as needed. You should be able to return to normal activities or work right after the procedure, and you can typically resume exercise within several days. Some localized soreness or swelling is normal, and typically resolved within a few weeks. Some patients have short-term altered sensation in the skin of their underarms or upper arms, which gradually disappears.
