Acne Fulminans

What is Acne Fulminans?

Acne Fulminans is a rare and severe form of inflammatory acne that appears suddenly and progresses rapidly. It is marked by painful, ulcerating nodules and abscesses, often accompanied by systemic symptoms such as fever, joint pain, and fatigue. Unlike typical acne, Acne Fulminans is considered a dermatologic emergency and requires urgent medical attention.

Who Gets It?

While uncommon, Acne Fulminans primarily affects adolescent males with a history of moderate to severe acne. It can also be triggered or worsened by certain medications, including high-dose oral isotretinoin or anabolic steroids.

Symptoms to Watch For:

  • Sudden onset of painful, bleeding acne nodules

  • Ulcerations and crusting, primarily on the face, chest, and back

  • Systemic symptoms: fever, malaise, joint pain (arthralgia), weight loss

  • Elevated inflammatory markers on lab testing

How Is It Treated?

At SOMA Skin & Laser, we understand the urgency and complexity of Acne Fulminans. Treatment typically includes:

  • Systemic corticosteroids to control inflammation and systemic symptoms

  • Low-dose isotretinoin, carefully introduced once inflammation is controlled

  • Pain management and wound care for ulcerated skin

  • Ongoing dermatologic monitoring to prevent long-term scarring and manage potential flare-ups

Why SOMA Skin & Laser?

Managing Acne Fulminans requires deep expertise in both dermatology and systemic therapy. At SOMA Skin & Laser, our board-certified dermatologists create individualized treatment plans to address both skin symptoms and systemic effects, while minimizing scarring and psychological impact.
