Burow’s Solution (Aluminum Acetate)
A time-tested astringent for soothing irritated and inflamed skin
What is Burow’s Solution?
Burow’s solution—also known as aluminum acetate solution—is a gentle, topical astringent used to reduce inflammation, dry weeping or oozing skin, and soothe irritation. It has been used in dermatology for over a century to treat a variety of acute skin conditions. The active ingredient, aluminum acetate, helps draw fluid out of the skin, tighten tissue, and create an environment that promotes healing.
Common brand names include:
- Domeboro®
- Burow’s Solution USP
- Star-Otic® (for ear use)
- Otic Domeboro®
- Ped-Boro®
How It Works
Burow’s solution works as an astringent, meaning it causes mild protein precipitation on the skin surface. This helps:
- Reduce swelling and inflammation
- Decrease fluid or “weepiness” from irritated skin
- Create a drier surface that discourages bacterial or fungal overgrowth
Common Uses
At SOMA Skin & Laser, Burow’s solution may be recommended for:
- Acute allergic contact dermatitis (such as poison ivy)
- Weeping eczema or intertrigo
- Minor fungal infections (to keep the area dry)
- Insect bites, mild burns, and local irritant reactions
- Otitis externa (ear canal inflammation), when formulated for otic use
How It’s Used
Burow’s solution can be applied as a wet dressing or compress:
- Soak a clean cloth or gauze in the solution.
- Wring out excess liquid.
- Apply to the affected area for 15–30 minutes.
- Repeat up to several times daily as directed by your clinician.
Safety and Precautions
- For external use only—do not apply to deep wounds or large open areas.
- Avoid contact with eyes or mucous membranes.
- Discontinue use if irritation worsens or signs of infection (spreading redness, pain, fever) occur.
- Use only under medical supervision if treating the ear or in children.
When to See a Dermatologist
While Burow’s solution can help calm inflamed or weeping skin, persistent rashes, pain, or infection require professional evaluation. Our dermatologists at SOMA Skin & Laser can diagnose the underlying cause and create a treatment plan tailored to your condition.
