miraDry Treatment for Hyperhidrosis in New Jersey
miraDry for underarm sweating
Many people are troubled by excessive underarm sweating (See also: Center for Hyperhidrosis). This can result in discomfort, the need to change clothing frequently, and social and professional embarrassment. Excessive underarm sweating can also contribute to odor. The medical name for excessive sweating is hyperhidrosis, and excessive sweating under the arms is termed axillary hyperhidrosis.
If axillary hyperhidrosis is a problem for you, then the miraDry treatment might be the treatment you need.
What is the miraDry procedure for underarm sweating (hyperhidrosis)?
MiraDry is an in-office procedure that can effectively reduce underarm sweating (or axillary hyperhidrosis). The procedure is non-invasive. The handpiece from the miraDry system is applied to the area to be treated, delivering electromagnetic energy that disrupts and eliminates the sweat glands. Once destroyed, these sweat glands do not regenerate, resulting in a long-term reduction in underarm sweating. The miraDry system is FDA-approved to reduce underarm sweat, and also is approved for hair removal.
How many miraDry treatments do I need?
Many patients see results and a decrease in sweating with just one procedure, but some patients require two or more procedures.
How long does a miraDry treatment take?
Each miraDry treatment for axillary hidrosis takes 60 to 90 minutes.
Are there other hyperhidrosis treatments besides miraDry?
Other treatment options for hyperhidrosis include antiperspirants, Botox, and topical and systemic glycopyrrolate. The results of these treatments are temporary. Antiperspirants and glycopyrrolate must be used daily. Botox must be injected every three or four months.
What are the results of miraDry?
Following the miraDry treatment, the underarm sweat glands are damaged, and they do not regenerate. This results in a long-lasting reduction in underarm sweating. In a clinical study, patients had an average reduction of 82% in underarm sweat. Results should be apparent immediately after treatment. As with any medical procedure, results will vary by person.
What happens during the miraDry procedure?
The miraDry procedure is performed in our New Jersey office. You will be given pre- and post- miraDry procedure instructions, and asked to shave both underarms prior to a procedure visit.
For the miraDry procedure, you will be lying on your back with your arms positioned above your head utilizing a special support pillow. The area to be treated will be marked with a temporary tattoo. This indicates where the miraDry applicator will be placed. Following this, injectable anesthetic (lidocaine) will be used to numb the area along with saline solution to protect the deeper structures. The injection of anesthesia is done with multiple small injections. You will feel pin-pricks during this part of the procedure.
Once you are numb, a technician will apply the miraDry device to your underarm, following the markings that were applied. At each location where the applicator is placed, you will feel suction but should not experience pain or discomfort. The applicator will be moved over the entire treatment area. If you feel significant discomfort or pain during the procedure let the technician know immediately so that more numbing can be added.
After the procedure, the technician will clean the area and apply an ice pack to the underarm area to reduce potential swelling. Following the procedure, you can return to normal activities, although it is advised to avoid vigorous activity for several days.
Does the miraDry procedure hurt?
The miraDry procedure does not hurt. The injection of the numbing medication is slightly uncomfortable, but after that the area is numb. You will likely feel suction from the vacuum in the handpiece, but not discomfort. The miraDry procedure was rated an average pain score of 2, on a scale from 1 to 10 (1=no pain, 10=worst pain).
Is there any downtime after the miraDry procedure?
There is minimal to no downtime following the mirDry procedure. For any discomfort, you can take over-the-counter pain medication, such as Tylenol, and use ice packs as needed. You should be able to return to work, school, and normal activities immediately after the procedure. You can usually exercise within several days. It is possible to experience some local soreness or swelling. This typically resolved within a few weeks. A few patients have experienced altered sensation in the skin of their underarms or upper arms, which gradually disappears.
What results can I expect from the miraDry procedure?
Most patients report a dramatic and long-lasting reduction of their sweat. In a clinical study, the average sweat reduction was 82%. The sweat reduction should be evident immediately after treatment. As with any medical procedure, results will vary by person.
How long will the results from miraDry last?
The results from miraDry are lasting because the sweat glands do not come back or regenerate after they have been eliminated.
Do I need my underarm sweat glands? Will I sweat more elsewhere?
You do not need the underarm sweat glands for cooling. These sweat glands are approximately 2% of your body’s total supply of sweat glands. They can be safely removed without causing hyperhidrosis elsewhere or interfering with your ability to cool yourself.
How is the miraDry procedure different from other treatment options?
Other treatments must be applied daily, such as antipersperants, or every few months such as Botox. Surgeries that disrupt the innervation of the axillary glands exist, but only miraDry is non-invasive.
Is the miraDry procedure right for me?
Almost everyone who suffers from excess underarm sweating is a good candidate for miraDry. If your underarm sweating interferes with your life or causes you discomfort or embarrassment, then miraDry might be right for you.
Does miraDry treat underarm odor?
miraDry has also received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance for the reduction of underarm odor. miraDry reduces underarm sweat by delivering localized heat to the area where the eccrine sweat glands reside. In many patients the device also eliminates the apocrine glands that are responsible for bad body odor.
Does miraDry remove underarm hair?
miraDry is also approved for the removal of underarm hair.
